Hello and Welcome!

My name is Stephanie Dunn and I’m a writer, blogger and editor. I live in Orange County, California with my husband, Dan, and our mutt, Coda. I received an MFA in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University and began this website as a place to share life, spin stories, and teach writers how to create dramatic, tight, enthralling fiction that demands to be read.

#FICTUREGRAMS

I write an Instagram Mystery Novel Series where readers follow fictional characters ______ and ______  as they solve crimes and puzzle out the greatest mystery of all – how they feel about each other. Any resemblance to real persons is entirely not coincidental. These are photos from my real life. All names and facts have been changed to protect the not-so-innocent. You can follow ______ and ______’s adventures on Instagram at @scdunnwrites or #ficturegrams.

I’m also working on a novel. If you’d like to know when the book is being published and other big news, feel free to submit your email address. I promise that no inboxes will be harmed in the process of signing up for these announcements.

BLOG

Take real life, add a pinch of hyperbole and a lot of mortification, and you’ve got the contents of this blog. Follow us (the real us, not the Insta-versions) on our adventures as we share personal posts about travel, love, home, family and friends.

Writing Tips

In the editing world, I’ve learned there is one common thing standing in the way of a writer getting published. We are too close to our work to detect subtle flaws that undermine a scene here, a sentence there, and weaken the overall impact of a potentially great story. We may have passion, talent, and training but we still need fresh perspective. That’s where professional editors come in, and why every established writer has one. But most aspiring writers don’t have that luxury nor do they want to place their work in a drawer for six months until they’ve gained perspective, as Stephen King recommends. My goal is to help you learn to self-edit like a professional. Not in six months. Today. In Writing Tips, you’ll learn the tricks to spin every word into gold.

Kind Words

“I am so grateful for all the effort you put into my story request. I seriously appreciate all that you did. A lot of the corrections and comments you made were things that I have been reading about, but have a difficult time seeing it in my own work. You have a talent for explaining things in a way that makes it comprehensible.”
– H.B.

“Your feedback is freaking amazing.  Thank you, thank you for such a detailed read through.  It really resonates with me because I feel like you’ve hit some of the same issues that my first choice agent found wanting, but you expounded upon them in a way that really peels away much of the confusion I’ve been wallowing in. I honestly feel that with your level of feedback, I will be able to give it the final tweaks to make it publishable. Steph, you are really, really good at this. You have a gift and I think you should keep using it.”
– Don Bentley

“Wow, Stephanie, you are amazing! This was among the most effective feedback I’ve ever received on a piece. I am extremely appreciative of your time.”
– Greggory Adams
